Lanzarote is the northernmost island in the Canary Island archipelago and lies in the Atlantic Ocean just 100 kilometers from the north-western coast of Africa, on the same latitude as the Bahamas and Florida. It covers an area of 800 km2 and reaches a maximum altitude of 600 meters above sea level. Of volcanic origin, with more than 300 craters, its appearance is not unlike to a lunar landscape.
The climate is mild and it very rarely rains, with an average winter-spring temperature of 20ºC and 24ºC in summer and autumn.
Lanzarote was declared an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993. The island is committed to protecting its natural environment, and to following a development model which prevents its values from being destroyed or damaged.
